Job Description

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech is seeking an outstanding candidate for a Muscle Food Safety Associate Extension Specialist. The position will be located at the Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AREC), (https://www.arec.vaes.vt.edu/arec/virginia-seafood.html ), Hampton, Virginia with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Food Science and Technology (www.fst.vt.edu ), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. This is a 12-month Extension Faculty position, with 80% Extension, 20% research appointment.


This Muscle Food Safety Associate Extension Specialist Faculty position supports the Virginia Seafood AREC mission of providing education, scientific and technical guidance, support and leadership to the commercial seafood and aquaculture industries throughout Virginia and the United States. This position will directly support food quality, safety, and consumer education through the practical application of HACCP, GMP’s and sanitation programs in conjunction with applications of new emerging processing technologies to control and/or eliminate biological, chemical, and physical hazards of concerns that can affect the safety and quality of food products; with an emphasis on seafood, from all sectors of the food supply chain. This position will also work to educate Extension agents (as it makes sense) to help deliver programs related to this content. This position will also have an adjunct appointment with the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D., or MS in Food Science, Food Safety, or Microbiology with strong knowledge and background in food safety or Food Microbiology. Strong writing, reporting, and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and programs. Must already be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in providing food safety training including HACCP, Good Manufacturing Practices, Sanitation Control Procedures, and Preventive Controls for Human Foods.
• Strong technical knowledge of HACCP, Good Manufacturing Practices and Food laws and regulations and their applications in various food industries.
• Strong technical knowledge in the application of microbiological research and methodology aspects of safety and quality in muscle foods.
• Experience in grant writing and successful funding is very important, as is experience in program assessment and reporting.
• A strong applied knowledge of written and spoken Spanish is preferred.
• Certificates on Hand: AFDO Seafood HACCP (a plus if already train the trainer), AFDO Sanitation Control Procedures (a plus if already train the trainer), Preventive Controls for Human Foods, Meat and Poultry HACCP, ServSafe
