The Hauf Lab at Virginia Tech (www.hauflab.org) is looking for a 1500-hr wage research technician to help with cloning and yeast strain construction for RNA live-cell imaging experiments. This is part of projects that address the role of non-coding elements of mRNA and the molecular basis of "ultra-low" gene expression noise (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adh5138). Techniques will include PCR, cloning, bacteria and yeast transformations, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing of yeast, and fluorescence microscopy.
This position is restricted to 6 - 12 months, and is ideal for someone who seeks additional training and experience in laboratory techniques before moving on to graduate school or an industry position. Some prior experience with molecular biology and excellent organizational skills are required. The minimum time commitment will be 15 hours/week. -Experience in a molecular cell biology laboratory outside of courses.
-Hands-on experience with basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR and cloning.
-Knowledge of proper laboratory procedures.
-Experience with documenting experiments and keeping a lab book
-Excellent organization and record-keeping skills.
-B.Sc. degree in biology or a related discipline.
-Experience in designing molecular biology experiments (primer design, cloning strategies).
-Experience with DNA sequence software (SnapGene, Benchling, Lasergene, or equivalent).
