Department Summary

The mission of the Division of Student Affairs is to create transformational experiences for all HSC students by providing tailored support and fostering holistic development. There are 8 functional units within the Division of Student Affairs: Center for Student Life, Career Readiness Center, Center for Academic Performance, Office of Care and Civility, Testing and Evaluation Services, International Services, Office of Disability Access, and Student Assistance Resource Center.

Position Overview

The Center for Academic Performance (CAP) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (HSC) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Part-Time Writing Assistant to support student success through academic writing assistance. CAP is committed to helping students achieve their personal and academic goals by providing comprehensive academic support services and programs.

The Writing Assistant will work closely with the Writing Coordinator to provide constructive feedback on student writing submissions, assist with writing support initiatives, and help develop supplemental learning materials. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in writing, editing, and academic coaching, particularly in health sciences or graduate-level education.

The selected candidate will establish a flexible schedule each semester based on need and availability. For FERPA compliance, all student appointments must take place in a private location to ensure confidentiality and protect student information.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Familiarity with college-level writing instruction, student coaching, and graduate-level writing.
• Strong analytical skills to assess writing quality and provide objective, thorough feedback.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage various student populations.
• Proficiency in quickly adapting to new technology and internalizing feedback.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of Academic Writing Standards: Understanding of graduate-level academic writing, including structure, argumentation, and clarity.
• Editing and Proofreading Expertise: Ability to assess and provide constructive feedback on student writing with attention to grammar, organization, and coherence.
• Familiarity with Citation Styles: Knowledge of academic formatting and citation styles such as APA and AMA.
• Understanding of Writing Instruction Best Practices: Awareness of effective strategies for teaching and coaching writing at the college and graduate levels.
• Strong Communication Skills: Ability to explain writing concepts clearly and professionally in written and verbal communication.
• Time Management and Organization: Capability to balance multiple student submissions, meet deadlines, and manage workload effectively.
•Ability to Work Independently: Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
• Technological Proficiency: Comfortable using online learning platforms, document-sharing tools, and virtual communication methods.
• Commitment to Academic Integrity: Understanding of plagiarism prevention strategies and ethical writing practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of at least 18 graduate hours in English or a related field.
• Experience with college-level composition and knowledge of scientific writing styles (e.g., APA, AMA, ICMJE).
• Experience working with ESL students and understanding their unique writing challenges.
• Knowledge of various academic writing styles and best practices in academic integrity.

Job Duties:

  • Review and assess student writing submissions, providing detailed, constructive feedback with strategies for improvement.
  • Support the Writing Coordinator in developing and updating instructional materials related to academic writing.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with students, ensuring timely feedback and guidance.
  • Stay up to date with best practices in writing instruction and academic support.
