Your next career opportunity
As a Laboratory Technician in the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne, you will play a crucial role in supporting practical classes and maintaining state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. You'll have the opportunity to work alongside leading academics and researchers, contributing to the education of future scientists and the advancement of chemical knowledge.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Prepare and Support Practical Classes: Set up laboratories, prepare chemical solutions, and assist with practical sessions for undergraduate students.
  • Maintain Laboratory Equipment: Test, calibrate, and maintain scientific instruments and apparatus to ensure optimal performance.
  • Manage Laboratory Resources: Conduct inventories, assist with purchasing, and ensure proper storage and disposal of chemicals and materials.
  • Provide Technical Support: Assist students and staff with enquiries, contribute to safety procedures, and maintain accurate records and databases.

You may be a great fit if:

You have a diploma or equivalent qualification in Science, with experience in a teaching or research laboratory setting and a passion for supporting scientific education and research.

You may also:

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrate strong organisational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Have experience with scientific instrumentation and laboratory techniques.
  • Are proficient in computer applications, including MS Office and laboratory software.

Your new team – School of Chemistry

The School of Chemistry at The University of Melbourne is one of the largest and oldest in Australia with a distinguished history in teaching and research. The first lectures in chemistry in The University of Melbourne were given in 1856, only three years after the University was founded. Since then the School has grown and developed and there are presently over 2500 undergraduates enrolled in Chemistry subjects, with more than 150 BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD research students. Teaching and undertaking research in the School are 23 continuing research and teaching staff, and over 30 research only staff, supported by a team of technical and administrative personnel. 

The School has an excellent international reputation in research and an outstanding record of achievement in attracting external research funding. There is an ongoing program to keep its research facilities at world standard and to focus our research efforts. This has involved progressive upgrading of the School's laboratories, the purchase of state-of-the-art instrumentation and recruitment of academics with a strong research profile.
