This is an exciting strategic and people leadership opportunity. As Director, Legal Services at the University of Melbourne, you will lead the Specialist Services team, providing expert legal advice on complex matters. You will have the opportunity to shape the University's risk management strategy, working autonomously in a dynamic environment. Your decisions will have significant impact, influencing the institution's success and reputation.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead Specialist Legal Services: Oversee the delivery of expert legal advice on all University litigation, escalated disputes and HR matters, and regulatory investigations.
  • Strategic Risk Management: Collaborate with leadership to support University objectives and manage institutional risk effectively. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure proactive legal support.
  • Team Leadership: Direct and develop a high-performing team of legal professionals, fostering a culture of excellence.

You may be a great fit if:

You are an experienced legal professional with a proven track record in managing complex litigation, adept at navigating complex institutional environments and providing strategic advice to senior leadership. you love a vibrant environment, diverse work and leading a small team.

 You should:

  • Possess relevant postgraduate qualification (law),10 years post admission
  • Possess extensive experience in litigation and dispute resolution, employment law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a small team of lawyers (4-6)
  • Demonstrate superior communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Thrive in dynamic environments, with the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
