The Project

The New Dunedin Hospital project is the single largest hospital project ever undertaken in New Zealand. Spanning 71,700m2 and constructed on the former Cadbury Chocolate Factory in the centre of the city, the Inpatient Building will provide high-quality acute medical facilities in support of its role as a tertiary teaching hospital. Onsite services will include 424 beds, including future expansion of 53 beds. A total of 24 theatres, including a future capacity of 2 theatres, imaging suites and radiology.

Your Opportunity

A unique opportunity exists for a Tier 1 Health & Safety Manager to demonstrate their skills and experience on a landmark Healthcare Project. You will be tasked with overseeing and supporting the safety function of the project, by coordinating the H&S practices, systems, and procedures on the project.

Working closely with the Project Engineers, Supervisors and Subcontractors on site, you will be responsible for ensuring an accurate, timely and responsive Health and Safety service is provided to the Project.

Core Responsibilities

  • Attending meetings to provide advice & guidance on H&S matters
  • Assisting in the delivery of Toolbox Talks ensuring the quality of content & delivery for safety topics
  • Undertake regular Safety Inspections and Task Observations with the project delivery team to provide advice, guidance and support in identification and rectification of issues
  • Supporting the use of, including undertaking monitoring and auditing of the records management system for safety records
  • Reviewing Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and facilitation of SWMS development workshops where necessary
  • Reviewing Contractor Safety Management Plans to ensure conformance to requirements
  • Lead or participate in investigations, as requested by the Project Manager, into all accidents/incidents to identify root causes and appropriate corrective/preventative actions
  • Provision of support in delivery of Daily Pre-starts
  • Compile data/evidence for monthly reporting
  • Developing and enforcemingof standards to ensure the Project complies with H&S regulatory and governance requirements

Experience, Skills and Behavioural Competencies required for this position:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a Health & Safety role in a construction environment
  • Robust knowledge of Health & Safety management system techniques and tools
  • Experienced in risk assessments and the development and monitoring of risk controls
  • Capability to conduct and interpret audits and reviews
  • Ability to confidently deliver training in high-risk activities such as working at heights, confined space, and rescue training
  • A high level of skill and experience in developing, analysing, and reporting on complex project performance, compliance, and defects and/or non-conformance
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and statutes and ability to interpret applicable statutes or legislation relevant to Project
  • Cert IV Work Health and Safety or equivlant
  • ICAM investigation qualification or similar
  • Lead Auditor Safety / Auditing a WHS Management System
  • Cert IV in Training and Assessment
