About the role: We are seeking a Category Adviser to support strategic procurement across our coal rollingstock portfolio, working on complex, asset‑intensive categories critical to rail operations. This is a 15 month fixed term position.
Reporting to the Category Lead, you will support the development and delivery of category and sourcing strategies and lead medium‑complexity procurement activities. The role has a strong focus on commercial outcomes, supplier management and stakeholder partnering across technically complex spend categories.
Categories in scope include:
- Locomotive power and major programs
- Future fleet: new energy locomotives including battery, hybrid and energy efficient options
- Engines and major locomotive systems
- Engineering aligned sustainment programs and overhauls that improve efficiency and extend life of assets
- Decarbonisation initiatives that reduce emissions
- Onboard technologies that drive efficiency
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement category and sourcing strategies
- Lead sourcing activities, negotiations, contract and warranty management
- Manage supplier relationships and contract performance across Tier 2–4 suppliers
- Partner with engineering, maintenance and operational stakeholders to manage risk and deliver value
- Track, report and realise procurement benefits
- Ensure compliance with procurement governance, legislation and Aurizon policies
We’re looking for someone with:
- Proven experience in procurement, commercial or category management within a large or complex organisation
- Strong negotiation, stakeholder engagement and contract management capability
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work across technically complex subject matter
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
- SAP (purchasing) and strong Excel capability highly regarded
- Qualifications (preferred)
- Bachelor of Business, Commerce, Engineering or a related discipline
- Professional accreditation such as CIPS, CA, CPA or CFA
