The Opportunity
Clinical communication is a learned discipline, and few units in Australia approach it with the rigour and specialist depth of Monash's Communication in Health Professions Education Unit (COHPE). As Director and Associate Professor (Education-Focused), you will lead a specialist academic department that draws on applied linguistics and health communication theory to prepare students and clinical educators across the health professions for the realities of diverse, multilingual healthcare environments.
Leading COHPE
Based at Clayton and operating across three metropolitan campuses and multiple clinical placement sites, COHPE delivers communication programs embedded within curricula and adjunct to them. In this continuing part-time, Level D appointment you will:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership of the Unit, overseeing program development, delivery, evaluation, and reporting to Faculty senior management
- Lead the COHPE Health Educators Program (CHEP), supporting placement educators working with students from diverse and multilingual backgrounds
- Drive educational innovation and scholarship of teaching and learning with a focus on interactional communication skills in clinical and placement contexts
- Manage unit performance, lead projects, and ensure COHPE activities align with Faculty strategic priorities
What You Bring
- A doctoral qualification in applied linguistics or linguistics
- Extensive experience developing and delivering communication programs within health professions education
- Demonstrated academic leadership, including curriculum design, review, and team development
- A record of education scholarship appropriate to a Level D Education Focused academic
- Experience engaging with multilingual learner cohorts and clinical placement environments
- Ability to advise senior academic and clinical stakeholders on communication education strategy
