The Opportunity

We are seeking a proactive, community‑focused Sustainability Officer to support the delivery of waste-education initiatives across two local councils. In this diverse role, you will contribute to stakeholder engagement, behaviour change, auditing, site assessments, and related activities. You will also lead education and engagement programs designed to enhance community participation in waste reduction and resource recovery across households and businesses.

Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Deliver a range of waste audit activities for residents, including methodology development and reporting (requires early mornings)
  • Improve community understanding of Council waste, recycling and organics services
  • Support and lead school waste education programs and community engagement activities such as pop-up displays in shopping centres and at events, workshops, presentations and landfill tours (requires weekend work)
  • Improve recycling behaviours and resource recovery outcomes through planned delivery, resulting in increased diversion and contamination reduction
  • Evaluate and optimise waste diversion strategies to maximise resource recovery
  • Liaise and collaborate with Council staff members, Cleanaway operations staff and internal marketing teams to identify residents’ education needs
  • Create sustainability awareness campaigns and communication materials including reports, presentations, social media content, video production and print material

About You

  • Tertiary qualified in Sustainability, Environmental Science, or other relevant fields
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build meaningful relationships with all internal and external stakeholders
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment and can effectively prioritise tasks
  • Tech-savvy and proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Willingness to get a Working with Children Check (WWCC) and recommended vaccinations for waste audit activities
