Job Summary: The Automotive Technician I repairs and maintains automobiles, trucks, and tractors, golf carts, mules, trailers, and other equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Assists with vehicle cleanup, changing batteries, hoses and lines, repairing flat tires, installing wiper blades, and assisting customers with fueling.
Additional Department Summary: The University of Alabama has 1,000+ units to be serviced. Approximately 250 units need preventive maintenance service every month. Repairs and maintains vehicles under general supervision. Receives guidance from one or more of the following: Automotive Technician III, Automotive Service Writer, Assistant Director, and/or Director in decisions relating to mechanical repairs and in matters concerning safe vehicle operation.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of vehicle repair experience in an auto shop. Successful completion at an Automotive Tech Trade Center or equivalent facility.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge: Must have the basic knowledge to determine the cause and extent of a component or system failure through test drives, pressure and temperature checks, and visual inspection. Ability to use diagnostic equipment. Ability to reference technical service manuals and schematics. Ability to diagnose problems/malfunctions and identify the part(s) and repair procedures that are required. Knowledge of principles, methods, and tools involved for moving people and/or securing goods/equipment. Ability to lift, handle, maneuver, and use the tools and equipment used in the performance of the duties required.
Preferred Qualifications: One ASE certification.
