Kenyon College invites applications for the position of Assistant Football Coach (Defense). This is a full time, 10-month reporting position with benefits. Under the general direction of the Head Football Coach, this coach will assist with the responsibilities of the NCAA D-III football program in accordance and compliance with NCAA, NCAC, and Kenyon College policies and regulations. The Assistant Football Coach will work in conjunction with the head coach to fulfill the following responsibilities: coaching student athletes, mentoring intern coaches, scouting opponents, recruiting various territories, tracking equipment and developing alumni contacts. Although the head coach will be primarily responsible for the organization, maintenance and implementation of the offensive and defensive game plan and installation, this assistant position will work with the defensive coordinator to facilitate this process. This position may also serve as the Special Teams Coordinator and/or Director of Operations, responsible for managing all duties related to the coordination of travel. Additional departmental responsibilities will be assigned in game management, teaching, and /or administration.

The Assistant Football Coach (Defense) serves the Department of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation in the Division of Student Affairs. This position reports to the Head Football Coach and supports the mission of the College in its focus on student development, outcomes and success. This is a ten (10) month position with benefits that includes morning, evening and weekend responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Coach a defensive position.
  • Mentor student athletes and coaching staff.
  • Provide opportunities for Assistant Coaches, Captains and players to become scholars of the game of football.
  • Assist in the creation of the playbook and game plan.
  • Take responsibility for the preparation, counseling and evaluation of personnel on and off the field.
  • Recruit academically and athletically strong applicants for admission in the selective, highly competitive application pool at Kenyon College utilizing Front Rush software, including preparing promotional materials.
  • Work in conjunction with athletic trainers to maintain student-athlete welfare.
  • Stay up-to-date with sport and coaching best practices in order to provide opportunities for all involved in the program to become students of the game by sharing knowledge of the sport.
  • All coaches are assigned additional duties in the areas of event /game management and teaching. These responsibilities are determined annually by Coordinator of Lifetime Fitness, Game / Event Manager, Facility Manager(s) and Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation.

Other Expectations:

  • Serve as liaison for academic advisement.
  • Serve as a member of the Athletics, Fitness and Recreation team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation at a fully residential campus housing 1800 undergraduate students.
  • Develop and maintain mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives and tasks.
  • Lead and assist with designated departmental, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes.
  • Develop meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus.
  • Assist with special projects and duties, as needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and compliance with the College’s and Department of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation policies and procedures as well as the North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Athletics Department’s student-athlete handbook, and the Student Affairs and College’s missions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise interns and student workers on daily basis.
  • Hire, assign, train and supervise student workers (if responsible for game management).

Working Conditions:

  • Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required.
  • The working schedule is not traditional nor regular: early morning, day, late evenings, weekends are required, as may be work during college breaks and summers.
  • Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required.
  • The ability to obtain College driver certification is desirable.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two or more years of college coaching with experience at the Division III level preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED Certification is required (and can be completed after hire).
