The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and Department of Health are seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a permanent Staff Specialist Neonatologist position.

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and Department of Health are seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants with specialist registration as a neonatologist in Australasia, for a permanent Staff Specialist Neonatologist position in the Department of Newborn Services and Children’s Critical Care (NSCCC). The successful applicant will provide care for neonatal patients and their families and support the combined neonatal and paediatric model of care in the Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU).

The RHH is the State’s tertiary neonatal and paediatric referral centre and the primary teaching hospital for the School of Medicine, University of Tasmania. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The successful applicant will hold a staff specialist neonatologist position within NSCCC, a state-wide tertiary service based at the RHH for critically ill neonates and children, with a combined model of service with staffing that provides both neonatal and paediatric intensive care. The NPICU and Special Care Nursery (SCN) has a combined total of 28 beds (8 NICU, 4 PICU/NICU, 16 SCN). NSCCC also has overarching responsibility for the provision of newborn and paediatric emergency transport (NETS/PETS) for the state of Tasmania.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a Staff Specialist Neonatologist, based at the RHH, who will provide tertiary level care for neonates and their families, as well as provide cross-support for paediatric intensivists in the care of critically ill-children in our combined NPICU.

The role includes:

  • Provision of medical services for neonates and infants with a wide range of medical and surgical disorders, including the care of extremely preterm infants.
  • In collaboration with our paediatric intensivists, provide mutual support for neonatal and paediatric intensive care patients as required and appropriate within our combined model of care.
  • Engage in the follow-up of NPICU/SCN patients, including service for the Early Development Clinic, and for those requiring ongoing intensive support in the home setting. 
  • In consultation with our Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, assist in the management and counselling of mothers with high-risk pregnancies in the High-Risk Antenatal Clinic.
  • Provide supervision and advice in matters relating to neonatal intensive care throughout Tasmania. 
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs. 
  • Undertake and support research and quality improvement activities in neonatology. 
  • Participate in professional development and continuing education activities.  
  • Participate in an out-of-hours on-call Roster for NPICU and the NETS/PETS Service. 
  • Participate in such hospital committees and administrative matters as required by the Hospital Chief Executive or Medical Director, Women’s and Children’s Services. 
  • Observe all hospital by-laws and statutory regulations. 
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training. 
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,389 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum.
  • Relocation allowance.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment

Permanent part-time day work (with on-call), working 53.2 hours per fortnight (0.7 FTE) commencing as soon as possible from 27 April 2025. FTE variation is open to negotiation with suitable candidates.

Essential Requirements

  • Holds specialist registration; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration
