Job description:

Public Health Services (PHS) works to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians by engaging with individuals, groups and communities statewide and nationally.

The Team:

Public Health Services (PHS) works to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians by engaging with individuals, groups and communities statewide and nationally. The Radiation Protection Team within PHS is responsible for the administration of the Radiation Protection Act in Tasmania to protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation. This is achieved through licensing, registration and a broad range of compliance and education activities.

The Role:

The purpose of this position is to assist in the development and implementation of innovative strategic responses to all aspects of radiation protection in Tasmania, including legislative development, regulatory compliance, education activities, and the development of innovative regulatory management solutions. The role will also:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of contemporary policies, procedures, codes of practice, standards, guidelines and legislation regulating the sale, storage, possession, and use of radiation apparatus and radioactive material in Tasmania.
  • Implement compliance activities, including inspections and investigations, to ensure the safe use of radiation apparatus and radioactive material in Tasmania.
  • Provide expert professional advice to a diverse range of clients on a broad range of policy issues pertaining to the regulatory system for radiation sources.
  • Monitor state, national and international policy trends and scientific developments using available resources, including literature and specialist meetings.
  • Conduct research and innovative projects in a timely and efficient manner to enhance radiation safety outcomes across a broad range of practices, including medical, dental, veterinary, industrial, and laser.

You will need:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of radiation protection legislation and relevant Commonwealth and jurisdictional legislative schemes applicable to the control and regulation of radiation sources.
  • High degree of analytical, conceptual, and communication skills, including the ability to provide high level technical advice to senior managers.
  • Demonstrated evidence of timely and efficient completion of innovative and research projects involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with diverse practitioner groups and organisations that operate radiation sources.

Details of appointment:

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight,  commencing as soon as possible.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary: $123,717 to $134,336 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022
  • Please note that access to salaries beyond $130,900 is subject to qualifications.

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Satisfactory completion of an approved tertiary qualification in Medical Physics or Health Physics or Physics or a related discipline. 

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications with at least five years practical experience as a Health Physicist.
