Summary: The School of Engineering within Grand Valley State University’s Seymour and Esther Padnos College of Engineering and Computing invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. A highly motivated candidate is sought to teach in the general areas of mechanics and machine design in addition to other areas that include but are not limited to controls and robotics. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach some lower division courses as well. The start date for this position is fall 2020.
This position will support the continued growth of GVSU’s Mechanical Engineering Program, which has doubled in size in the last several years. The Mechanical Engineering Program offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree as well as a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) degree. The BSE program includes mandatory co-op education experiences and an extensive experiential learning component. The MSE program emphasizes professional practice as well as applied research. Partly sponsored by the local industry, these programs yield job-ready as well as graduate school-ready engineering graduates in support of the diversified regional industries.
This position involves teaching in our undergraduate and graduate engineering programs, professional service, and scholarly activity. The successful applicant will support the BSE and MSE programs in Mechanical Engineering primarily through teaching, curriculum as well as course development, and scholarly activities including professional development. The applicant will support our co-op-education and project-based teaching process as well as industrial collaborations.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must have a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Of particular interest is teaching and industrial experience as well as experience related to establishing and running industrial grade projects. Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be committed to the highest quality of laboratory and project-based teaching along with scholarly activity and professional development.
Preferred Qualifications: Professional licensure, the ability to teach broadly in one’s field, and an interest in general curriculum development are desirable. An ability to participate in and capitalize upon existing collaborations with our West Michigan industrial partners and a history of external funding are highly valued.
