MELD Lab researchers study mathematical cognition with two overarching primary goals: 1. to understand some basic underpinnings of human cognition, and 2. to find ways to leverage this understanding into effective pedagogical techniques that can be used to impact the life chances of everyday people. The largest project that the candidate will support will involve exploring how the human ability to perceptually access the magnitudes of nonsymbolic ratios (i.e., ratios composed of pairs of nonsymbolic stimuli, such as two line segments with lengths in a 2:3 ratio) might be used to support understanding of symbolic fractions, but there are several other projects also operating concurrently. The person hired for this position will serve as project manager and will organize the day-to-day operation of the project under the supervision of the PI. This includes recruiting participants, scheduling and participating in data collection, helping to design data collection scripts and coding manuals, coding data, overseeing the work of undergraduate research assistants, managing and maintaining project databases, assisting with literature reviews, and creating materials for conference presentations and manuscripts. The position includes occasional evening and weekend work.
