JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing and the Nurse Manager, these positions provide professional nursing care and health services, including nursing assessments, examinations, and treatment. Provides patient-focused advice and education. Conducts health promotion and educational outreach. Collaborates with other providers to enable students to attain and maintain good health.  As college health nurses, these positions support the maintenance and improvement of the health of students, identifying and assisting in removing or modifying health-related barriers and supporting early detection and early intervention strategies. Refers students to other resources as appropriate; maintains electronic medical records and ensures compliance with state laws and regulations, SHaW policies and procedures, and program protocols.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interviews patients, documents medical history, examines patients, and makes assessments of the condition of such patients. Counsels the patient with regard to treatment and prevention.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team to formulate an individualized plan of care for student patients.
  • Administers medications and treatments via established protocols as authorized by licensed Physicians and Nurse Practitioners.
  • Provides specific health counseling and general health education to concerned individuals, patients and groups.
  • Refers patient for specialized medical care beyond the scope of the Student Health Service, including arrangement for any necessary ambulance transportation.
  • Gives necessary emergency treatment and referral to anyone ill/injured on campus.
  • Participates in and/or conducts in-service presentations. Participates in various SHaW and university committees and advisory groups.
  • Maintains proper clinical records and reports. Maintains drugs, medical supplies, and equipment as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of CT.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or other health-related field.
  • Three years of current nursing experience working directly with adolescents/young adults in ambulatory care, public health, and/or emergency settings.
  • Demonstrable physical assessment skills.
  • Utilization of an electronic health record.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating information.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising independent judgment and decision-making.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Must have a demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a College Health Setting or as a Community Health Nurse.
  • Experience providing Nursing Telephone Advice/Triage.
  • IV placement Skills.
  • Experience providing nursing care in an Allergy Clinic.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This opening is for two positions.  One position is a permanent 9-month position that works days/evenings mid-August through mid-May annually, with 3 months of paid summer leave, and the second position is a 10-month day shift position working mid-July through mid-May, with alternating weekends, and 2 months of paid summer leave. The hours listed are during the fall and spring academic semesters.  Hours during break times are 8 am – 4 pm. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
