Job Description

The GIS Analyst performs a variety of intermediate to advanced technical duties related to the responsibilities of the Potomac Aquifer Recharge Monitoring Laboratory (PARML) in conjunction with the Hampton Roads Sanitation District SWIFT infrastructure project with a focus on the GIS applications, data analysis, and reporting workflow. The GIS Analyst will compile, manipulate, and analyze geospatial data; will design, develop, and maintain databases and systems of GIS data; and will create reports, maps, applications, and visualizations conveying the results of spatial analyses.

The following duties are core to the position:
• Create, edit, maintain, and organize geographic and tabular data.
• Create high-quality products, print and web maps, web mapping applications (i.e. story maps, dashboards, etc.), data visualizations, presentation materials, annual or quarterly publications, and custom reports
• Perform geoprocessing and prepare and execute queries in spatial and non-spatial databases
• Support PARML communications including reporting and website content
• Assist PARML personnel and VT students with data requests and support of research projects; Communicate in a professional manner with PARML personnel, VT faculty and staff, and students, and SWIFT/HRSD personnel.
• Assist PARML personnel with activities at the SWIFT Projects located in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia

The successful candidate will also be expected to perform other duties as assigned to support student success and the department’s mission.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in in GIS, geography, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience with practical GIS
• Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software (Desktop and Pro)
• Proven experience using Excel and Microsoft Office in a professional setting
• Experience with data management and reporting
• Practical experience working with groundwater data monitoring and managed aquifer recharge projects including water infrastructure and utilities
• Experience and working in a student-focused collegiate setting (i.e. academic research, support of research projects, etc.)
• A demonstrated ability to handle sensitive data with the strictest confidence and in accordance with regulatory requirements and data sharing agreements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience producing high-quality graphics and exhibits in support of academic research and scholarly publications
• A demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public
• Experience with field data collection including environmental sampling, basic laboratory analysis, and GPS techniques
• Possession of a vehicle operator's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
