Job Summary/Basic Function:

Supports the design, development, maintenance, and operation of custom software, data pipelines, automation tools, and internal applications that enable fundraising, reporting, and operational processes. Works under the guidance of a senior developer to implement well-defined tasks, contribute to data workflows, and assist with application support, documentation, and enhancements. Builds and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, fostering a collaborative and service-oriented environment.

A nonprofit Idaho organization, the Boise State University Foundation was established in 1964 for the benefit of Boise State University. We work to secure philanthropic support for the university by developing and nurturing relationships with our alumni and friends and stewarding gifts made to support Boise State. The Foundation works closely with university leadership, the Boise State University Alumni Association, and the Bronco Athletic Association.

Mission: To build a greater Boise State University, we provide fundraising leadership and service across the university and partner with donors and alumni to inspire private support.

Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:

60% of the time the Cloud Developer 1 must:

  • Support and Maintain Data Pipelines:
    • Assist in monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving issues in data workflows, scripts, Lambdas, Step Functions, and automations.
      o Perform updates to scripts and tools under supervision (e.g., file formatting, data cleaning, transformations).
      o Help maintain scheduled jobs, ensure files arrive as expected, and validate input/output data quality.
      o Follow established coding standards, documentation guidelines, and deployment processes.
      o Communicate issues, risks, or unexpected results to senior staff promptly.
  • Develop and Enhance Software:
    • Implement small code changes, features, or bug fixes to internal tools, backend services, and automation scripts.
    • Assist with building and modifying Python-based logic for data processing, reporting, or AWS-driven workflows.
    • Use AWS services such as Lambda, S3, Step Functions, Glue, EventBridge, and DynamoDB as appropriate for assigned tasks.
    • Help write unit tests or validation checks for new or changed logic.
  • Support Dashboards and Data Visualization:
    • Assist in preparing datasets for dashboards and visualizations, including validating fields, checking data quality, and ensuring consistency for use in dashboards, currently Amazon QuickSight.
    • Support the development and maintenance of dashboards, currently QuickSight, including updating visuals, adding fields, and ensuring charts follow established design patterns.
  • Test New and Updated Code:
    • Assist in executing manual test cases for modified scripts, pipelines, and datasets.
    • Document test results and communicate discrepancies.
    • Apply foundational best practices in data validation, error handling, and quality assurance.
  • Document Systems and Changes:
    • Write clear, concise notes on updates, logic changes, and troubleshooting steps.
    • Contribute to building internal documentation, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
    • Maintain organized records of enhancements and recurring issues.
  • Development of Self:
    • Participate in on-the-job learning about data engineering, cloud technologies, Python development, and software best practices.
    • Seek feedback and apply lessons to improve code quality and technical understanding.

35% of the time the Cloud Developer 1:

  • Coding, data analytics, and other technology-related projects.

5% of the time the Cloud Developer 1:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, and debug basic code (primarily Python).
  • Interest in data workflows (CSV, Parquet, Excel, SQL, APIs, ETL processes).
  • Familiarity with cloud concepts (AWS preferred).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and established patterns.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and frameworks.
  • Well-organized, self-motivated with ability to manage multiple small tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, enabling effective dialogue, conflict resolution, and relationship-building in a mission-driven environment.
  • Skilled in building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness to uncover the “why” behind stakeholder needs then translate them into project requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • Current AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification or higher.
  • Python programming experience using Pandas library.
  • Experience with serverless development on AWS using Lambda and Step Functions.
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning concepts demonstrated through coursework or personal projects.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
  • Understanding of clean coding principles.
  • Familiarity with data visualization best practices demonstrated through coursework or personal projects.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is $55,057.60 to $68,827.20 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
