Communities consume food and beverages from around the world, but we all contribute waste to a shared stream. Our wastewater system serves as a kind of Megacolon, an external shared organ that receives our pooled microbiome and virome until it is recycled as someone else’s drinking water. Our lab is part of a national consortium of new projects that are monitoring wastewater across America for pathogens. The data already collected gives stakeholders valuable aggregate information that provides several days lead time over other measures of pandemic spread. Our lab is focused on optimizing the testing and data interpretation from this newly appreciated ecological community that bridges the world within to the world without. Our lab is seeking a Postdoc in Bioinformatics.
