Team overview:

As trusted advisors and collaborative partners, the Finance and Assurance function provides a range of services to all parts of the university to drive financial sustainability and provide expert advice and compliance assurance to support delivery of the University Strategy and operational activities.

Our Assurance capability, consisting of Legal Services, Compliance and Contract Governance, develops the University frameworks and policy, and key expertise that underpins compliance and corporate governance and Deakin's commitment to high standards of integrity.

About the role:

The Lead, Privacy plays a pivotal role in leading and managing the university’s privacy program, ensuring compliance with data protection laws and regulation, and promoting a culture of privacy across the University. This is a specialist Privacy position that works tactically and proactively on a range of privacy issues and provides high-level operational advice to the Head of Compliance.

As a Lead, you will:

  • Manage aspects of Deakin’s privacy program and frameworks, along with risk and awareness.
  • Work with colleagues across the University, and external partners, to safeguard personal data and ensure that the university adheres to applicable privacy frameworks and relevant local and international privacy regulations.
  • Lead privacy risk assessments, data protection impact assessments and privacy audits.
  • Lead the development and implementation of best practice and proactive-focused data protection and privacy strategy. Track legal and regulatory changes and advise the University on how they impact data and privacy practices.
  • Oversee the response to privacy breaches and data security incidents, ensuring timely reporting and resolution
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of privacy training and awareness programs for university

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of the common law and any relevant legislation as it relates to privacy and general compliance related activities in Australia.
  • Extensive relevant experience in the implementation of privacy controls within complex organisational and digital environments.
  • Expertise in developing privacy policies, frameworks, and managing data breaches.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and deliver strategic outcomes.
  • Experience in advising senior stakeholders and delivering high-level presentations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders.
