INTRODUCTION

The Department of Animal Science, part of the University of Connecticut's College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, is searching for an Agricultural Worker 2.  This individual will work at the multiple animal units of the Animal Science Department with the Dairy Unit as primary location in support of our Animal and Crop Units under the supervision of the Educational Program Manager 2.

This position is for 37.5 hours per week, with a rotating schedule including some nights, weekends and holidays with hours of 5am – 1pm. 

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff.  The individual in this role must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations.  Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, holidays).

PURPOSES OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

Accountable for performing the most highly skilled agricultural work or acting as a lead over other agricultural workers, providing care to the University's herds/flocks of animals. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs highly skilled agricultural work in one or more areas related to general farm labor, farm animals and agricultural functions.
  • Leads staff engaged in agricultural work in a related area.
  • Assists professional staff engaged in instructional and research work.
  • Demonstrates and participates in scientific and technical methods and procedures used in agriculture.
  • Uses heavy earth moving equipment to dig ditches, clean drainage ditches, load gravel, and perform general landscape work.
  • Transports equipment, livestock, grains and feed.
  • Plows snow.
  • Ensures standards for quality of dairy products.
  • Repairs complex farm machinery and other equipment.
  • Breeds and neuters animals.
  • Mixes feed rations and maintains weight records for animals.
  • Determines proper lighting and ventilation of greenhouses. 
  • Determines methods and procedures to be used in culture and propagation of plants. 
  • Manages agricultural products salesroom and sells products. 
  • Keeps records, statistical research data, logs and prepares reports. 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • methods used in culture and propagation of crops, produce, plants, flowers and orchards;
    • care, health and management of animals;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Considerable ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of complex equipment and machinery related to particular agricultural area;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

  • Three (3) years of experience in one of the following areas related to the specific needs of the position:
    • General farm labor (crops, produce, orchards, etc.)
    • Farm animal science and/or maintenance (dairy, horses, poultry, sheep, pigs, etc. emphasis on large animal experience)
    • Plant science
    • Dairy manufacturing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training in agriculture or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate strength, stamina, physical agility, visual, auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness to be able to perform the duties required for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from machinery or animals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active and valid CDL-A driver’s license
  • Three (3) years’ direct, recent (within the last 7 years) experience with large farm animals
