Responsible for support of the general operational needs of the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Department, including technical and setup assistance for EES courses, course field trips and other Department functions. Oversees and helps to maintain EES facilities devoted to computing, fabrication, equipment repair and sample processing. Monitors and ensures safety in all EES spaces in the STEPS Building. Serves as the safety liaison for EES, coordinating with other entities in the building. The Lehigh community takes seriously our commitment to antiracism and The Principles of our Equitable Community.

1. Provides general operational and technical support for Department activities, with emphasis on support of the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) instructional mission
*Provides setup assistance and technical support for designated EES courses
*Assists with staging and setup for course-related field trips
*Assists with demonstrations for undergraduate and graduate level classes
*Manages setup for Departmental events, coordinating with other entities in the STEPS Building
*Receives EES deliveries; assists in coordination of deliveries to other entities in the STEPS Building
*Assists faculty and other staff by providing basic repairs, fabrication, etc. for instrumentation and facilities in research labs, commensurate with skills and as time and other duties permit

2. Provides day-to-day oversight and management of designated EES support facilities, including sample prep labs, fabrication and electronics shops and storage areas
*Manages the general upkeep of these facilities by conducting regular inspections, ordering of supplies, etc.
*Maintains and repairs (or coordinates the repair of) equipment in these facilities
*Monitors access to these spaces, and ensures safe and clean operations through training and posting of appropriate safety and usage guidelines
*Manages periodic cleaning and upkeep of these spaces, engaging others in the Department where needed and appropriate

3. Monitors and maintains safety in all EES spaces in the STEPS Building
*Serves as the primary EES Safety Officer and chairs the EES Department Safety Committee; maintains safety documentation for the Department
*Periodically conducts basic safety surveys of EES space; tracks safety issues to ensure that they are corrected in a timely fashion
*Responds to safety concerns reported by others, directing issues to the attention of appropriate personnel
*Administers or coordinates safety training for activities where such training cannot be provided by faculty researchers or other technical staff members
*Ensures safety in the STEPS loading dock and gas tank storage space
*Maintains updated chemical inventories in all EES spaces

4. Supports designated STEPS Building computer and instructional technology resources
*Monitors and works to ensure the continued operation of projection equipment, computers, printers, network access and other IT resources in EES classrooms and teaching labs, coordinating with Library and Technology Services (LTS) as appropriate
*Works with LTS to maintain operation of the STEPS public-use computer facility
*Monitors the usage of printer and other supplies in EES computing facilities and orders new supplies as needed; manages billing for use of the Department’s large format printer
*Assists with software upgrades and new hardware setup

5. Reporting accountability
*Report monthly to the Department Chair on progress on previously planned activities, for planning and accountability purposes

The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community

This position works with minors

Will often be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, lift up to 25 pounds, work near moving mechanical parts,  work near fumes or airborne particles, in areas of risk of electrical hazards or vibration


Associates or Vocational/Technical Degree in a Science, Engineering, or Technical field; Bachelor's Degree preferred (in EES or allied field in the Sciences and Engineering)

One to three years related work experience

Analytical equipment operation and maintenance, fabrication/repair skills a plus

Position should be able to manage their time efficiently to accomplish assigned accountabilities

Safety, first aid, harassment and diversity training must be completed within 90 days of employment

Supervisory experience preferred

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Attention to detail and organizational skills required

Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
