Police Officer - Campus Safety Division

About the Opportunity

As a Police Officer, you will patrol our beautiful campus on foot, bicycle, and in patrol vehicles to deter crime, enforce laws and university policies, and respond to incidents. You'll protect campus buildings and residential areas while providing essential support to community members in their daily activities. Through proactive engagement and comprehensive public safety services, you'll help ensure our community remains a place where all can live, work, and learn with confidence.

Position Number: S79560

This position is a Grade: 9 - 40 with an approximate salary range of $55,200-$67,180 and is subject to change based on experience, skills and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive safety, security, and law enforcement services to the campus community, ensuring a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Patrol campus grounds by foot, bicycle, and vehicle; monitor and secure buildings; and respond promptly to alarms and reported safety or maintenance concerns.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, including medical incidents, accidents, fires, and criminal activity, taking appropriate action to resolve situations.
  • Enforce university policies and applicable local, state, and federal laws, including issuing citations, managing traffic, and addressing disturbances or violations.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and professionalism by making timely decisions, maintaining required training (including firearms and defensive tactics), and actively supporting departmental operations and community engagement.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of crimes, accidents, and other incidents by gathering evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, identifying suspects, and making or assisting with arrests as appropriate.
  • Prepare detailed reports and criminal complaints, maintain follow-up with involved parties, collaborate with external agencies, and support legal proceedings by preparing cases and testifying in court as needed.
  • Serve as a first responder to a wide range of campus emergencies, including medical, fire, behavioral, and criminal incidents, by providing immediate assistance, administering basic medical aid, gathering critical information, coordinating with emergency personnel, and maintaining required certifications such as NIMS.
  • Engage in proactive crime prevention and community policing efforts by building relationships with students, faculty, staff, and visitors; providing safety guidance; participating in outreach programs; and, when assigned, delivering training or serving as a departmental instructor.
  • Deliver responsive, customer-focused service by assisting campus community members (e.g., lockouts, jump starts), maintaining a visible and approachable presence, and upholding all department and university policies while treating every individual with dignity and respect.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and operational readiness by adhering to uniform and appearance standards, caring for issued equipment and vehicles, following administrative procedures, and demonstrating reliability through punctuality, accountability, and independent work.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One to three years of related work experience
  • Act 120 Certification required
  • Valid Driver’s License required and good driving record
