About BMD

BMD is Australia’s leading integrated engineering, construction and urban development business. As the largest privately owned civil contractor in Australia, BMD is at the forefront of excellence, with a growing international footprint extending to the Philippines and the United Kingdom.

About the Role

We’re seeking a highly experienced Project Director to lead the delivery of a brownfield WWTP upgrade in Charmhaven on the Central Coast of NSW. This pivotal leadership role spans end‑to‑end delivery from pre‑award mobilization and procurement through construction, interface management with live operations, and commissioning/process proving.

You will set the delivery strategy, build and mentor a high‑performing team, and ensure outcomes align with BMD Group standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements. Success will be measured across financial performance, safety, culture, environmental compliance, quality, and stakeholder relationships.

  • This role is project based and requires a candidate willing to work in the Charmhaven/Central Coast region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own project strategy, program and budget, including P6 scheduling, risk registers and change control.
  • Lead delivery in a live operational environment, coordinating shutdown planning, isolations and permits with the plant operator.
  • Direct multidisciplinary design and construction (civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/SCADA), OEM integration and FAT/SAT.
  • Govern commercials (cost control, forecasting, reporting), subcontractor performance and procurement of long‑lead process equipment.
  • Champion HSEQ: critical risk management, CHAZOP/HAZOP participation, ITP/hold points, environmental controls (odour/noise, effluent licensing).
  • Drive stakeholder engagement with the client, regulators and community, ensuring timely approvals and transparent communications.
  • Lead commissioning and process optimisation, achieving performance KPIs and handover requirements.
  • Build a high‑performance culture—coaching project managers and discipline leads, and embedding BMD’s values across the team.

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Process Engineering; postgraduate qualifications in Project Management or Business advantageous.
  • 15+ years delivering large, complex water/wastewater infrastructure, including WWTP upgrades in brownfield/live environments.
  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary teams and Tier‑1/Tier‑2 subcontractors across design‑construct and D&C delivery models.
  • Demonstrated success in commissioning/process proving (FAT/SAT, performance testing, ramp‑up to compliance).
  • Strong grasp of NSW delivery frameworks and standards (e.g., GC21/AS contracts, SafeWork NSW critical risk controls, WSAA guidelines), with regulator interface experience.
  • Deep experience with risk management, CHAZOP/HAZOP, shutdown planning, isolation and permit systems.
  • Commercial acumen in cost control, forecasting, earned value/reporting, and claims/variations management.
  • Fluency in SCADA/instrumentation interfaces, OEM coordination and systems integration (preferred).
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with a track record of building enduring client relationships.
  • A personal commitment to leadership, accountability, continuous improvement and team wellbeing.
