JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Information Technology Services (ITS), is seeking a technical and self-motivated Data Center System Administrator 1. Under the direction of the Data Center Team Lead, this position will be responsible for facilitating the installation of IT infrastructure and equipment for all departments within the University. This technical, service-oriented position is based on the Storrs campus in support of the universities’ multiple data center locations and operational services. The nature of this position requires the employee to be on site and periodic travel to remote campuses and equipment locations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform site surveys for data center equipment requests.
  • Coordinate daily activities, deliveries, and installations of equipment as requested.
  • Collect and maintain assigned tasks and projects in project/workflow management systems.
  • Maintain inventory of devices and infrastructure accurately and in compliance with university data protection and information security policies and procedures.
  • Generate and maintain departmental documentation for internal and external audiences at the direction of the supervisor.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot configurations, scripts and communications of data center environment.
  • Schedule work and coordinate access for data center tenants, customers, or vendors.
  • Assist in the installation of network equipment, including start-up, implementation, and documentation.
  • Train students or contracted resources to work in and update our record systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information in compliance with University Information Security Policies.
  • Work independently on tasks assigned by a supervisor.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Support colleagues and teams for large scale network projects.
  • Facilitate communication with university departments to address specific project interests.
  • Decommissioning of legacy equipment and associated documentation.
  • Installation and testing equipment / circuits in the data center as directed by senior technical staff.
  • Manage inventory of users, devices, and infrastructure in administrative systems.
  • Monitoring platform and maintain device inventory.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. US Citizenship.
  2. Education or experience:
    1. Associate’s degree in related field with six years of related experience in the design, planning, specifications, and management of telecommunication network /information technology infrastructure.

       OR

    1. Bachelor’s degree in related field with four years of related experience in the design, planning, specifications, and management of telecommunication network /information technology infrastructure.

       OR

    1. Eight years of experience in telecommunications infrastructure design, installation, testing and commissioning with two years of related experience in the design, planning, specification, and management of telecommunication network /information technology infrastructure.
  1. Experience installing fiber optic and copper cable circuits in a data center environment to include troubleshooting, labeling, and documentation.
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of productivity software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Visio.
  2. Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with people and work with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.
  5. Experience managing data center infrastructure management (DCIM) systems to manage inventory, infrastructure and device operation.
  6. Experience replacing Cisco/Juniper network blades, power supplies, and network modules.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated experience with planning, generating, editing, and organizing drawings using AutoCAD or Visio.
  2. Experience or demonstrated familiarity with IT help desk/trouble tickets and documentation systems, specifically Atlassian Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Teams.
  3. Demonstrated experience using Microsoft project to plan and track work efforts.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of data center environmental systems and their operation.
  5. Certifications and/or credentials or training in system, network or data center administration.
  6. Work experience in a campus environment or for a university or similar institution.
