As a Senior Lawyer in Suncorp Legal, you will deliver motor defence litigation services and practical legal advice to our Recoveries & Settlements teams. You will manage a portfolio of motor vehicle defence matters, including credit hire and recovery agent claims, primarily in Victoria. The role involves advising stakeholders, drafting legal documents, appearing in court, briefing counsel, and running matters through the Magistrates Court. You will guide matters to commercial resolution, support team capability through mentoring, and contribute to broader business outcomes by advising on strategy and procedural improvement.
What you’ll do
- Manage legal matters commercially and maximise defence opportunities
- Provide strategic advice to stakeholders on overall trends and strategic change in motor vehicle litigation in addition to individual litigated matters
- Represent Suncorp’s interests at court appearances as necessary
- Innovate and share knowledge within a collaborative team environment
- Support and mentor colleagues, contributing to a collaborative and connected legal team
- Partner closely with Recoveries & Settlements teams to maximise recovery opportunities and minimise external legal spend
- Advise on the implications of regulatory change and key legal decisions
- Actively promote and participate in activities which contribute to the delivery of the Suncorp and stakeholder strategy
What you’ll bring
- Admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in Australia, with a current Practising Certificate
- Relevant litigation experience including extensive understanding of Victorian Magistrates Court litigation and regulations (either pre or post admission)
- Demonstrated experience in motor vehicle defence litigation, including credit hire and repair disputes
- The ability to provide strategic advice to the business on overall trends in motor vehicle litigation in addition to individual litigated matters
- The ability to communicate complex business and legal issues to a range of audiences
- High performance standards and commercially focused approach to work
- The ability to adapt to changing internal and external environments
- A desire to work with stakeholders to assist with change and their improvement
