About the Position: 

Facilities Management is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining a safe, sustainable, and high-quality learning and working environment for the campus community. Facilities Management provides oversight of university resources and assets and is responsible for the development of the University’s facilities including land use planning, capital improvement, project development, construction, as well as facilities operations and maintenance including custodial services, landscape services, building trade services, mechanical and electrical, and recycling services. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Lead Building Service Engineer. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. 

Under the general supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, or their designee, the Lead Building Service Engineer works with and oversees leading the Refrigeration/Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop and any work completed by Building Service Engineers and semiskilled assistants. The work of the Lead Building Service Engineer is distinguished from the Building Service Engineer by the additional responsibilities of providing lead work direction to several journey-level crafts workers and semi-skilled assistants, laying out and coordinating the workflow for jobs, and preparing materials lists and ordering supplies for jobs. Unlike the Supervising Building Service Engineer, the Lead Building Service Engineer spends most of the time working as a skilled Building Service Engineer but has ancillary lead work and project planning responsibilities. In the absence of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, the Lead will perform those duties as well. The primary focus of the Lead Building Engineer will be in the following areas: Operate, maintain, service, install, troubleshoot, repair and inspect a full range of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical, and related systems and components throughout the campus facilities.

This is a key position which cares for campus buildings and systems to support the University's mission, vision, and values in higher education. This position will interact with a diverse group of individuals. The Lead Building Service Engineer works well in a team environment and understands the balance of sharing duties, taking ownership, and will take the initiative to complete tasks as needed. This position takes pride in every aspect of their work to create and maintain an excellent learning environment at Cal State University Fullerton. A Lead Building Service Engineer thrives in a university environment where staff are empowered for personal growth and supported in professional growth. Other duties as assigned. 

Essential Qualifications

Two or more years of experience as a journey-level Building Service Engineer that included some work or project coordination responsibilities. Thorough knowledge of high- and low-pressure boilers, and heating, pneumatic, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical equipment. Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the operation, maintenance and repair of such equipment. Thorough mechanical and technical knowledge. Working knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques project sequencing. Thorough knowledge of the applicable state and federal safety codes and regulations pertaining to mechanical and HVAC systems. General knowledge of ventilation principles, thermal dynamics, and closed water systems. Working knowledge of energy management systems including the ability to understand and use system features.

Ability to install, operate and repair HVAC equipment and systems. Ability to lead, instruct and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of skilled and semi-skilled workers. Ability to provide direction on the interpretation and use of blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications to the work crew. Ability to accurately estimate costs, supplies and materials needed for jobs and projects, prepare materials lists, ensure work is performed in sequence, and inspect and assess work to ensure it meets requirements and specifications. Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to maintain computerized maintenance management systems and records and prepare more complex reports. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization. Ability to use a computer and a variety of computer-based tools including Microsoft applications. Ability to create reports and maintain equipment logs.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in a large, institutional facility. Experience in the operation and maintenance of large refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, piping systems, Energy Management System (EMS) and Building Management System (BMS), and related central plant and cogeneration equipment and systems such as chillers, boilers, turbine, and pumping stations.

License/Certifications

A Valid California Driver’s License.  Live Scan is required.

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the current Annual Security Report (ASR) is available for viewing at: https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. This report contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for California State University, Fullerton for the last three (3) calendar years. Paper copies are available upon request at the CSUF Police Department.

 

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR)
