Assistant Director, Intercultural Programs and Global Union

Responsible for programming for international students to support them in their pursuit of educational, career and personal goals. This person develops and manages programs that promote participation and engagement of international students and scholars within the University community and beyond.  The incumbent will serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer who will issue immigration documents and serve as an advisor to international students on matters pertaining to U.S. immigration laws as the need arises. The Lehigh community takes seriously our commitment to antiracism and The Principles of our Equitable Community.

1. Programming
*In cooperation with Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) Director, design and manage OISS programming efforts throughout the year; this includes, but is not limited to, managing several year-long programs to integrate international students and scholars into the Lehigh and Bethlehem community
*Assist with programming, hire, train and supervise work study students; work with the OISS Director and the Associate Director to ensure that work study student hours are used to holistically support OISS needs
*Design and manage International Education Week, which is a collaborative event for the entire campus community
*Design and manage the Annual International Bazaar in the spring in collaboration with Bazaar student committee members
*Assess programs offered by OISS on a regular basis to determine if programs are meeting student needs, fulfilling learning outcomes and enhancing student retention; review program assessments with the OISS Director and propose changes to improve OISS programming
*Attend programs organized by OISS regularly; if the Assistant Director is unable to attend certain events, he/she will work with OISS staff to ensure that OISS is represented
*Develop and manage annual budgets for all programs and collaborate with the OISS Director for final decisions regarding programming expenses

2. Global Union
*Hire, train and supervise the Graduate Assistant who advises the Global Union (GU)
*Oversee 50+ student clubs who are members of the Global Union
*Manage all Global Union programming, including regular meetings of the GU Executive Board, execution of funding transfers for GU funding requests, maintenance of the GU website and maintenance of GU e-mail and files
*Advise GU e-board on the design and implementation of GU-related programming; encourage programming that is designed to cultivate meaningful interaction between Lehigh’s domestic and international students
*Participate in outreach activities with GU stakeholders, including alumni, sponsors and donors
*Develop and manage annual budgets for the Global Union and collaborate with the OISS Director for final decisions regarding programming expenses

3. Orientation
*In cooperation with the OISS Director, design and manage international student orientations in the fall and spring semesters; this includes close collaboration with other campus offices such as Housing, the Health & Wellness Center, Office of First Year Experience and the Graduate Life Office to ensure effective pre-arrival communication and seamless student experience as students matriculate to Lehigh
*For each orientation cycle, hire, train and supervise International Orientation Leaders (iOLs); design and execute a training program to ensure that iOLs understand the challenges that new students are facing and can effectively connect them to various campus resources to assist with their transition to Lehigh
*In cooperation with the OISS Director and other campus stakeholders, oversee airport pickup and assist with housing check-in for new international students
*Assess orientation programs to determine if programs are meeting student needs, fulfilling learning outcomes and enhancing student retention; review program assessments with the OISS Director and propose changes to improve orientations
*Develop and manage annual budgets for orientation and collaborate with the OISS Director for final decisions regarding programming expenses
*Work closely with the OISS Associate Director on OISS Graduate Assistant scheduling to ensure equitable coverage for all areas of OISS

4. Marketing and outreach
*In collaboration with the OISS Director, design and execute programs and presentations designed to promote internationalization and intercultural competence at a University-wide level
*Collaborate with other campus offices to develop programs that support Office of International Affairs activities related to the promotion of campus inclusivity
*Participate on University-wide committees as assigned by the OISS Director to ensure that international student and scholar needs are represented
*Oversee social media platforms and event e-mails sent through iHome or OIA Newsletter. Work with the OISS Director and Associate Director to develop and execute a communication plan for each academic year, and delegate communication tasks to Graduate Assistants as possible

5. Advising
*Serve as a back-up international student advisor on an as-needed basis
*Issue immigration documents such as I-20s and DS-2019s during busy times
*Work with the OISS Director and the Associate Director to ensure that advising communications and reminders are clear and distributed properly for all student and scholar populations

6. Budget maintenance
*Utilize Banner Finance and the University expense reporting system to ensure accuracy of all financial transactions
*Meet with the OISS Director monthly to review all expenditures for final sign-off; maintain good financial stewardship by keeping accurate financial records, keeping documentation per Lehigh standards and signing off on monthly expenditures in a timely manner

Special Considerations

The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community

This position is funded by soft dollars; there is no severance associated with this position

US Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency required by federal regulation in order to serve as a DSO/ARO


Bachelor's Degree in Intercultural Studies, Student Affairs, International Education, Communications or a related field; Master's degree preferred

Three to five years related work experience

Attention to detail and organizational skills required

Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Experience with international education and/or exposure to different cultures and languages is preferred

Strong project management skills and accountability in meeting deadlines and juggling multiple projects

Works well with in a collaborative team environment

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
